Rustenburg – Riding on the wave of its service delivery turnaround strategy in 2018, Rustenburg Local Municipality (RLM) launched its #ReDirelaSechaba (‘we work for the community’) service delivery programme on 22 February 2019.

“Having already seen favourable results from the turnaround strategy that we rolled out in our 2018/19 financial year, in terms of delivering much-needed services to the people of Rustenburg, we are excited to launch this programme. It will not only allow the municipality to further deliver on its mandate to communities and the business community, but it will also change the lives of our people by creating jobs and fostering entrepreneurship,” said executive mayor of RLM councillor Mpho Khunou.
The RLM has prioritised five focus areas namely: roads, electricity, water, sanitation and community development.

The launch unpacked a service delivery programme that will ensure the rollout and maintenance of road infrastructure through a rapid response team, access to water and improvement of water conservation, stabilisation of electrical supply through the rollout of more substations and distribution lines as well as improved sanitation facilities. These projects will amount to about R110 million.

“Through our turnaround strategy last year, we were able to reduce the number of service complaints related to water services,” added Khunou. “We increased the city’s electrical capacity to avoid power outages and straining of distribution lines. We saw an improvement of our Green Drop rating from the Department of Water and Sanitation, and our turnaround times in fixing our roads have lessened significantly. The programme will elevate the quality of service to our people exponentially and propel us even closer to our goal of being a world-class city.”

The Mayor also revealed that the programme will create 150 jobs and empower local businesses to form cooperatives that will benefit directly from the opportunities to participate economically through the work opportunities that will result from the implementation of #ReDirelaSechaba.
