Rustenburg – The North West Police cautions the community to take extra care to safeguard their vehicles, as a spike of motor vehicle theft cases have been reported in the province.

Most of the cases are reposted in Phokeng, Marikana, Boitekong and Rustenburg. Within the Rustenburg cluster, places such as the central business district, Waterfall, Impala shafts, Greenside, Luka, Marikana West, Mmaditlhokwa, Meriting Extension 2, Paardekraal and Ramochana are targeted. Vehicles are targeted at night in parking lots.

Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone, police spokesperson, urges motorists to take precautionary measures during the festive season. Here are a few helpful hints:

  • Exercise caution at parking areas.
  • Report suspicious vehicle or persons to the Police. 
  • Avoid parking vehicles for a long time in areas or streets which are poorly lit.
  • Ensure vehicles and motor cycles are locked and safely parked inside a premise.
