Koster/ Derby – “An elderly couple, 77-year old Ben Paynter and his wife, 72-year old Marietjie Paynter were ambushed on Thursday evening, 9 November at approximately 20h00,” says captain Elsabé Augoustides, police spokesperson.

Their farm, called Basfontein, is situated on the border between Derby and Koster.

Three armed African suspects overpowered the couple, assaulted them, held them at gunpoint and tied them up.

The farm attackers then ransacked the house: they loaded sun panels, computers, generators, cell phones and other household items into the elderly couple’s white Isuzu bakkie with white canopy (registration number: JHG402NW) and white trailer (registration number: ZBY667GP).

Eight hours later, at approximately 03h00 on Friday morning, the suspects took off.

The injured and bruised couple managed to free themselves and called for help. They have been admitted to a local hospital for medical observation.

The Police deployed various components, including the K9 unit and the Police helicopter, in the search for the attackers.

A case of house robbery has been opened at the Koster police station.

Investigations continue. If you have any information about this farm attack, please contact captain Joanie Heymans on 082-374 9857 or the Koster Police on 014-543 8600.
