A court ruling has made it illegal to spank your child in SA
Letter to the Editor
How do parents feel about this? Let’s refer to passages from the Bible (NKJV).
Proverbs 23: 13-14: “Do not withhold correction from a child, for if you beat him with a rod, he will not die. You shall beat him with a rod, and deliver his soul from hell.”
Proverbs 29: 15: “The rod and rebuke give wisdom, but a child left to himself brings shame to his mother.”
In my opinion, either you are fit to be a parent, or not. Parents need to be adult enough to understand what it means to be a parent. I do not condone assault or abuse.
Discipline is guidance; children are born not knowing boundaries. Some boundaries can be guided without a spanking, while others require punishment to understand what they did was unacceptable. I’ve raised my two children by disciplining them when needed.
I was corrected as a child by my parents, and have done the same in the upbringing of mine. They knew why they were being punished; it was always out of love, never anger.
Today, my offspring are my pride and joy, for the respectful, thoughtful, well-mannered adults they have become.
Without discipline at home or school, what will become of our future generations?
