ARRESTED, RELEASED, REPEATED… In South Africa, police make about 1.1 million arrests a year – roughly 3,000 a day. Yet only a fraction end in jail: around 37 % of the national prison population are awaiting trial, not convicted. Court delays are real – recent reports show that the criminal case backlog reduction target was only about 43 % achieved, meaning many cases still wait in the system. Many arrested people are released on bail or warning while courts take months or years to conclude matters.
